If you take on personal photography projects with human subjects, this is the document you need.
It could be you have decided to document the workers & animals at an animal shelter, an alternative school, the journey of infertility… the list goes on. This is basically a “cover your ass” for any photography project you are shooting without exchange of money.
So WTF is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)?
Similar to a contract, a memorandum of understanding is an agreement between two or more parties and are generally used to document a relationship of goodwill between the parties to the MOU. A MOU helps to limit responsibilities on both sides. Since this agreement is meant for personal projects (as in, projects you take on without pay/in exchange for money from the subject(s) you are photographing), limiting responsibilities is helpful to ensure you can stop the project at any time if needed, without consequence. Likewise, it gives your subject(s) opportunity to pull out of the project if they choose to.
This Personal / Photography Project MOU has been drafted up by Arce Stark & Haskell, LLP., a pair of kick ass lawyers who listened to our wants & needs and brought this bad boy to life.
